My mum got admitted to ward 43 Altnagelvin Hospital where she sadly got diagnosed with advanced uterine cancer. Unfortunately within 10 days of admission she passed away peacefully on the ward.
The care and compassion shown by all staff - including domestics service staff, nursing assistants, student nurses, nurses, doctors and consultants - was exemplary.
My mum formed brilliant relationships with the staff team looking after her and voiced how impressive and caring they were. As her daughter, it was clear that the people, in their respective roles, truly honoured their vocation and treated my mum with the utmost respect and care.
Those who made a massive impact on me , my mum and my family was Dr Lavery the Consultant. Dr Lavery’s approach is something we will always remember. He treated my mum like a human, valued her wants and needs and never met decisions about her without her - true patient-centred care.
Dr Black treated my mum's complications on the night of admission, giving us 10 days with her and for that we will be forever grateful. The nurses Deirdre and Laura who spent significant time with mum and treated her with dignity is something we will always remember.
Nurse Specialist Heather was there during the time of the bad news and helped teach me and my mum and our family about what the diagnosis meant and told such information with a kind and gentle heart.
Dr Cosgrove, another consultant, was present on the day of mum's passing and her kindness and gentle compassionate nature eased our sense of fear.
Although our poor mum was too poorly for treatment to result in a happy ending, we take comfort in the care and treatment she received in Ward 43 Altnagelvin Hospital. The staff are true angels on earth and their names are etched on our hearts forever.
"The staff are true angels on earth"
