"Nothing but praise for the care he has shown"

About: Older People’s Mental Health and Memory Service / Southern Sector

(as a service user),

We were a long time waiting for a diagnosis of dementia for my mum but before a formal diagnosis came her mental health took a downward turn and she started experiencing hallucinations.

We contacted the older person's mental health team and Robert was our designated CPN. Hand on heart I have nothing but praise for the care he has shown, not just to my mum but my brother and sister too. The doctor who visited my mum to give us the diagnosis told us that without Robert advocating for us, we could still be waiting to help Mum.

She is now on medication and whilst we know she will never improve from where she is today that without Robert's help, care, calmness and utmost unflappable attitude we as a family and especially my mum's health would be a lot worse.

Dear Libran55

My name is Nicola Hayes and I am Acting Head of Service for Older People's Mental Health Services.

Thank you for your feedback story 'Nothing but praise for the care he has shown'.

It is unfortunate that your mother had to wait so long for her diagnosis. Community mental health services are vital, particularly for people living with dementia, to ensure continuity of care is maintained in their home environment, without any distressing and unnecessary transfers to hospital, which is a critical aspect of care delivery for someone living with dementia.

Approach and communication are vital in the caring profession, not only to ensure that all your mother’s needs were met, but also that your/family needs were met during your difficult situation at that time.

I am equally delighted to hear that the care and treatment provided was of high standard throughout and was person centred for both you and your mother and that Robert has been praised in providing this care to you and your mother. Robert will be delighted to receive this feedback, as he strives to ensure that he provides the best he can to each of his patients.

May I thank you for taking the time to share your experiences with us on care opinion.

Your feedback is very welcome to ensure safe, effective, compassionate and well led care is delivered.

Best Wishes

Nicola
