"I feel completely unsupported"

About: Community Mental Health / Community Mental Health Team (Adult)

(as a service user),

I was referred to North Ayrshire Mental Team at the Three Towns Resource Centre. I was referred after my second inpatient admission from my consultant and nurses on the ward. I was told I would be supported upon discharge and things couldn’t have gone more wrong.

I was met with two CPN’s and was told that they would not offer a CPN input or any other kind of therapy. I was told that those with BPD have to self manage. Keep in mind these people have just met me and don’t know me as a person.

In the meeting one of the nurses proceeded to question certain medication I had been put on. These medications are the only thing that gives me some stability and was prescribed by another professional who actually knew me. I found that to be quite rude considering I had only met them for 5 minutes.

I have been unable to see a psychiatrist or any other professional from this team. I was however offered decider skills and motivational interviewing. I attended the 4 allocated sessions for motivational interviewing in preparation for commencing decider skills. I am yet to start this group, however, have explained I don’t do well in groups due to anxiety and this was shrugged off.

My mum, step-dad and myself have been begging for me to have some more input as I’ve been in and out of crisis, which has resulted in two more attempts on my life. I have already done some decider skills while inpatient on a 1:1 basis but was told that it’s nothing like the 10 weeks course which I understand but still have anxiety as it’s in a group setting.

I feel completely unsupported by professionals that are supposed to be there when you need them.

In my discharge plan from inpatient it was stated that a CPN would be advised as this worked previously, but again this was also ignored. I feel that staff have been neglectful and shown no interest in actually providing any form of support. This has caused great difficulty in having any source of stability in my life and has caused me a great deal of distress.

Dear CoinJW95

I am sorry to hear about the recent difficulty you have experienced with your mental health and that you have been disappointed by the support you have received from the North Ayrshire Adult Community Mental Health Service.

Within the Service a number of “Care Pathways” are used to guide decision making around the most appropriate care and support for people accessing the service depending upon their individual need.

Motivational Interviewing followed by participation in The Decider skills based programme form the initial stages of one of these care pathways, which may explain why you have been guided to these interventions. I would also highlight that whilst awaiting input from The Decider patients have access to the Duty Service which is operated by the Mental Health Service and is able to provide response to more immediate issues and needs.

Unfortunately, without further specific details of your own circumstances I am unable to further investigate the concerns that you have raised, and I am unable to discuss confidential information about your own care and treatment on a public forum such as this. I would therefore ask that you contact the Service directly and ask to speak to either Karen Renucci, Team Leader, or myself, Chris Gilmour, Service Manager, and we can look into the issues you have raised in more detail.
