"Uncaring Night Staff"

About: Barnet Hospital

Was admitted to ward after op. Very painful as I am unable to take strong painkillers. One particular night started vomiting and had bad stomach pains. I asked for sick bowl and was left to it, the nurses on duty that night were walking past me without even trying to help me in spite of me shouting for help….I was totally ignored while night nurses were joking and on their mobile phones. On this particular night there was a young man working and he ran over and tried to help, he stayed with me holding me upright while I was being sick. He was professional and very helpful once he realised how sick I felt. I cannot praise this young man enough if he wasn’t there that night I dont know what I would have done! Please pass on my heartfelt thanks to him. Also the day nurses were very hardworking and seemed to carry out the majority of the work, please also thank them . Physiotherapist was also excellent, it such a pity that the night staff let the hospital down. How can a night nurse take 2 hours to dispense medication to 8 patients? Easy if she is spending her time to be on her mobile in between patient! Nurses dancing and joking on the ward when patients are ignored is not very professional. Please note that the above is all to do with the night nurses and not the hardworking day staff. Its such a shame we are not able to name and acknowledge the good work carried out by the above mentioned in this review as rules state names will not be published!

Dear reviewer, we're very sorry to read you've had such a poor experience with night nurses on one of our wards, after your surgery. On this note, we would like to be able to look into this further with management, but to do so would need to know which ward you were on. Could we please ask you to email us more information at rf.bh-patientexperience@nhs.net to assist with this? Or, if you prefer, you can contact our Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS). PALS can be contacted by email at bcfpals@nhs.net or telephone on 0208 216 4924. Separately, we note there was a colleague who tried to assist you that night and that day staff and physiotherapists provided excellent care. When we have more detail, we'll ensure these compliments are passed on. Sending you our best wishes, the Barnet patient experience team.
