When I first arrived, I wasn't well and I did not know myself. Only Dr. Kinch and staff advised me that I needed to go to the main hospital. So I was taken from Asha to Altnagelvin where I spent 8 days getting urgent medical treatment. My addiction had left me seriously ill. I then returned back to ASHA as my room was kept for me. I was greeted by staff and for the next 4 weeks I was well looked after by all the staff. I got on well with most people on the ward.
What was good about ASHA - I found the first week settling in watching documentaries helpful before I was required to do group work. It gave me time to get to know the staff and patients while detoxing.
There's honestly nothing that could have been better during my stay.
I was very well looked after. If I had any problems, I could approach staff at any time night or day. Food was good. All patients have private bedrooms which are comfortable. Daily short walks were good first thing in morning, even though I have difficulty walking, the staff catered to these needs by ensuring the walks were short and flat so I was able to join the group.
I am now 6 weeks sober and I feel clear headed, I can think and I know my personal hygiene has got a lot better. I can talk more now whereas before I wouldn't speak much.
