During my recent stay, I was appalled by several instances of poor practice. The cleanliness of the ward (HD) was severely lacking; faeces and urine were left on the floor and only superficially mopped, spreading rather than eliminating the contamination.
On a number of occasions, a nurse drained another patient's catheter bag right next to me with no use of the curtain, violating basic hygiene protocols and my personal space. I was witness to multiple private and confidential discussions regarding other patients.
Additionally, the staff seemed overwhelmed and inattentive. Medication offered was simply forgotten about by my nightshift nurse leading to extreme acid reflux. A lot to contend with on top of the other symptoms I had. The overall atmosphere had significantly undermined my trust in the NHS.
While it's true that the NHS is facing significant challenges, including underfunding and staff shortages, it doesn't mean that poor care should be accepted as inevitable.
Of note there were positives about my care and most staff very understanding and helpful, ensuring my main medication was priority and keeping me informed.
Patients deserve a basic standard of care that ensures their safety, dignity, and well-being. Issues such as unclean environments and inadequate attention to hygiene are unacceptable and should be addressed through better management, increased resources, and stricter adherence to health and safety protocols.
I write this not to shame or blame any healthcare professionals but to advocate for improvements and hold the system accountable which are essential steps in ensuring that care quality does not deteriorate further.
