My elderly mum found a lump in her breast recently. We called the GP and she was seen the next day. Within 7 days she was seen at Gartnavel General breast clinic by Miss Campbell and Kisrty (Specialist Nurse) where she underwent a mammogram, ultrasound and biopsy. She was diagnosed within 2 weeks with either a sarcoma or spindlecell tumour in her breast.
She was referred to the Sarcoma specialist Prof Lo and Clare at Glasgow Royal Infirmary . Within a week she had a CAT scan followed by an MRI scan . Then after another few days she underwent a radical mastectomy by Professor Lo . 10 days later she was given the all clear as the pathology showed all the tumour which was in fact a Spindlecell tumour had been removed.
From the beginning of her journey to the removal of the tumour a few weeks later my Mum was treated professionally, efficiently and kindly by every member of the NHS she met. From her GP to both her Consultants and Cancer Care nurses to the hospital/ward staff, clinic staff , radiography staff . I was proud to work in the NHS for 41 years and the negative publicity , sometimes deserved though through no fault of the staff, is upsetting so I wanted to share a positive journey that my family experienced. Thank you NHS !
"A positive journey"
