"Well done for finally getting the process correct"

About: Craigavon Area Hospital / Outpatient Parenteral Antimicrobial Therapy Radiography services / MRI Services

(as the patient),

I have been to the MRI department a number of times at Craigavon. In previous times in trying to inset a canula into my arm they have botched it every time. 1st time had blood over the floor and then they gave up, 2nd time I nearly ended up fainting and given the number of attempts they had trying to get in my arm, again they ended up giving up. To be fair, I am not the easiest of patients and my veins do hide at the mere hint of giving a blood sample or a needle.

This time I am pleased to say the process appeared to have changed and I was sent up to the Ramone building first to have the canula inserted. Wow this time it was done without any fuss, no stabbing, no blood all over the floor, no fainting, just in and done. Well done Craigavon for finally getting the process correct and well done to Pauline for making it feel so effortless.

So the moral of the story, is probably to use the correct trained staff to do the correct job and not let every Tom, Dick and Harry loose with a needle.

Thanks guys.....

Hi Uropa1955,

Many thanks for taking the time to leave your feedback on your recent and previous experiences.

I am so glad that the OPAT nurse was able to complete your vascular access effortlessly as I know they are extremely skilled in this area and that your experience was much more pleasant than previous.

I will be sure to share this with Pauline.

Yvonne

Hi Uropa1955,

Thank you so much for taking the time to share your feedback.

I am sorry to hear that you have previously had unpleasant experiences having a cannula placed during your visit to MRI.

I would like to reassure you that any staff carrying out this role are properly trained and experienced, however there are cases when venous access is more difficult.

It is for this reason that the pathway with the Phlebotomy team was set up to enable patients with difficult venous access to attend the phlebotomy Team to have the cannula inserted prior to attending the MRI department.

I am glad to hear that this pathway has resulted in an improved experience for your most recent visit, your feedback is greatly appreciated.
