I have been drinking since my early teens. This became problematic in my early 20's and I am now in my thirties 34. This is my first detox in the UK.
I was drinking whilst pregnant, but could not stop, I knew had and issue.
I initially sought help in Europe and did various detox's but relapsed.
I then approached CGL in the UK and was assigned a key worker. It took several months to be accepted at Dame Carol. I had mixed feelings about doing a detox again. As this was in the UK I thought I had a better chance of success.
On my first day I was tired and intoxicated, also fearful due to my social anxiety. I was reassured in advance of the small groups and that it was a safe space. By day 3 I felt really comfortable and joining in with all the clients.
The detox centre feels homely and not medical. I have enjoyed the groups and I participated coming out of my shell quickly. The other clients were really supportive. The staff were excellent. There is a lot of love here.
Some more physical activity would be good here. Also a little bit more of an idea about what is happening when I leave.
At day 11 I feel optimistic, I'm aware it will not be easy but I am prepared with my strengths for the next stage. It is a beautiful space.
"There is a lot of love here."
