"Disappointing Care"

About: Maternity care / Antenatal and Postnatal (Ward 38)

(as the patient),

I was disappointed with some of the maternity care I received, which I would like to highlight. I had a vaginal swab done in Triage after going in with a bleed, and I gave birth 10 days later. The swab came back showing e-coli, but I was not informed of this until I asked after birth if there was any result. I was then started on oral antibiotics for this. The following day, just before discharge, my baby had an increased respiratory rate and then needed a full sceptic screen, an x-ray, 2 failed lumbar punctures and IV antibiotics. What effects did these antibiotics have on my newborn baby's body? He also had lots of blood tests done and we had some bad experiences with that too. My thoughts are, could this traumatic time have been prevented, had my swab been followed up and had I been treated for the e-coli before delivery?

I was also only offered a bed change once in my 5 day stay on Ward 38 which I would have appreciated being done more often, due to the post birth sweats and a sicky baby, and some days I was not given water until the evening. I also had to help myself to towels every day as these were not offered.

However, I did also receive some exemplary care which I will highlight separately as these people deserve recognition.

Dear Starrz23

Thank you for taking time to share your feedback with the maternity team. I am so sorry to hear that your experience was as described in your story. Please also accept my sincere apology for the delayed response.

I will share your feedback with the relevant SCM for each of the areas highlighted and ask them to share your story for learning and consideration of actions to avoid duplication.

Without clinical detail, we are unable to investigate the concerns specific to you and your baby that would require access to your case notes however please know that your feedback will still be used to inform practice in the clinical setting and aid learning and reflection within teams.

The feedback regarding access to clean bedding and towels will be raised directly to the clinical area to ensure that this is considered for action.

I notice you have been given details above to respond via our patient experience team and I would urge you to do this if you feel you would like a more specific response to the questions raised. I would be happy to consider this in greater detail and I am sure our neonatal colleagues would be happy to consider the queries raised in relation to the care of your baby.

I am pleased to hear you had some positive experiences during your stay and met a number of staff who provided care in the way we hope those accessing our services receive. It is very kind of you to acknowledge this.

I would like to thank you for taking time to share your story as hearing from families accessing our services is the best way to understand lived experiences and always provides us with rich learning and perspective.

Warm Regards,

Lee-Anne Abel, Senior Midwife
