"Offered time, understanding, & valuable information"

About: Parent Support Link

(as a staff member posting for a patient/service user),

I live with my sister, who has been struggling with depression and heavy drinking for some time. I’ve witnessed her getting arrested for drunken fights and causing disturbances in the street, as well as breaking things. Our childhood wasn’t the best, and she has struggled to cope as an adult; since her drinking began, things have only worsened.

I reached out to Parent Support Link (PSL) through their 7-day-a-week phone line, and right away, I felt supported. They listened to me without judging my sister, unlike so many others who have been critical. I had a conversation with a team member that was a significant breakthrough for me. They offered me time, understanding, and valuable information about where my sister could find help and support. I left feeling positive, which is something I hadn’t experienced in a long time.

I’m continuing to have my appointments and recently attended my first group session, which was incredibly welcoming and supportive. Slowly, my sister has noticed a change in me, and honestly, I’ve seen a change in her as well. It’s been over two months since she got into trouble with the police, and her episodes of going missing for days have drastically decreased. I cannot thank PSL enough for all the support they have provided me so far.

It sounds like you've been through such a difficult time with your sister’s struggles, but it's incredible to hear how reaching out to Parent Support Link (PSL) has had such a positive impact on both you and her. It takes a lot of strength to seek help, especially when it feels like others have been judgmental, so I’m really glad PSL provided that non-judgmental, understanding support when you needed it most.

It’s also encouraging to hear about the changes in your sister—small steps can lead to big progress, and it seems like your own journey toward healing is helping her too. It must feel like a weight has been lifted, knowing she hasn’t had any major incidents for two months. Keep attending those sessions and taking care of yourself; your growth is clearly having a ripple effect. It’s inspiring to see that the support you’ve received is making such a difference!
