"It’s the little things that make a big difference"

About: Royal Aberdeen Children's Hospital / Day Case Unit Royal Aberdeen Children's Hospital / Surgical Paediatrics (Children's Surgery)

(as a parent/guardian),

My little boy was admitted to the paediatric day care unit to undergo a procedure. He was admitted at 12 and had fasted since 7:30.

Everyone was so kind, especially the play nurse.

He didn’t go for his procedure till after 5 and due to the recovery time needed I was moved to the surgical ward.

What a different experience that was, from the moment I arrived I noticed they were busy. As a nurse myself I understand. However when my son returned after 6pm - nearly fasted 12 hours he wasn’t even offered anything to eat or drink.

Luckily I had a couple of snacks in my bag.

It’s the little things that make a big difference and he was starving.

Maybe just be mindful of patients being transferred from the daycare unit - they are still a patient.

Thank you for taking time to give us this feedback. I'm delighted you had such a good experience in Day Case. I'm sorry that your son waited so long to have his procedure done. You right it is the small things that matter and I totally understand he must have been ravenous.

I will pass onto the team in the surgical ward to ensure that when patients are being transferred up they may well be needing food or drink if they have just returned from theatre. If you are happy to share with me directly (sue.danby@nhs.scot) his name I can ensure we look at this event in full and apply learning.

Thank you also for your understanding as an empathetic nurse that it looked like the ward was busy. However we still strive to deliver good quality care and this includes feeding our hungry patients!

I hope your son is recovering well now.

Kind Regards

Sue Danby
