"I am so grateful for the high standard of care"

About: Queen Margaret Hospital / Gynaecology Victoria Hospital / Gynaecology

(as a service user),

I want to submit positive feedback on a biopsy and two separate hysteroscopies I have experienced at NHS Fife.

I had a biopsy at the end of 2022 at Victoria Hospital in Kirkcaldy followed by a hysteroscopy and polyp removal at Queen Margaret Hospital in Dunfermline early in 2023. In summer 2024 I had a second hysteroscopy and biopsy, again at Queen Margaret.

All consultants and other medical staff were outstanding from start to finish. The consultants I saw were Dr McNab, Dr Devi, and Dr Elmoursi. Dr  Dias carried out the second hysteroscopy. At all times the nurses and doctors were so patient and reassuring. I did not feel rushed in any way, and the procedures all went very smoothly under local anaesthetic. I did not experience any pain, or even discomfort, and the whole process was over quickly.

I wanted to write this to pass on my thanks for the exceptional care, and also to provide a positive insight for anyone awaiting this procedure. I know it can be scary going through this and that individuals react differently, but having such expert, kind, and respectful staff goes a long way towards taking away the fear and uncertainty. For me, it also helped that I was allowed to watch the procedure on the screen.

The only suggestions I have are minor. These are:

1) Explain in the appointment letter why it is recommended to bring someone to the appointment. I can't remember the exact wording, but I remember finding that a little bit scary, as I read it as meaning the procedure is not one that a patient should go through alone. Of course, this is very individual, but I attended alone and drove home afterwards, and it was absolutely fine.

2) Perhaps also explain in the appointment letter that there will be a lot of people (in my case 5 or 6) in the room during the procedure. I found this quite scary when I first walked into the room, but once it was explained to me that everyone had a distinct role, I was more relaxed.

Finally, I can't remember being offered a general anaesthetic first time round, but it was offered the second time. I opted for a local both times, and that was fine for me. I think I would just like to highlight the importance of consistency and offering options.

Thank you again to everyone. I am so grateful for the high standard of care. I would also extend this to the radiography team who took the preliminary scans requested by my GP, and to the lovely administrative team.

I should perhaps also mention the tea and biscuits after the procedure, which were most welcome!
