I was driving my car when a car travelling on the opposite side of the road collided with me head-on. The impact caused my airbag to explode and I sustained a displaced fracture to my sternum, some fractured ribs and cuts and bruises. I was taken by ambulance to the Red Resus. Area of the Emergency Department. After triage involving a full body CT scan and the application of an Aspen neck brace, I was transferred to the Major Trauma Unit, where I spent the next 9 days.
I want to thank and applaud the exceptional care, kindness and support of all the medical staff. In particular, I will always remember the comfort and care given to me by:
Nurse Daniel , Nurse Shannon , Nurse Sandhu, Stephanie, Paula, Críostór and Aine. I also very much appreciated the sensitivity and empathy of Doctor Xeudi ( junior orthopaedic).
All of the staff worked as an exemplary team and I felt safe and secure in their care, at a time when I was utterly helpless and immobile.
As I began my slow recovery, I felt the staff’s continuing support. One or two of us shed a few tears as I said my goodbyes to them, and that is surely a testament to their selfless and tireless commitment to the care of the sick and vulnerable.
I can only hope and trust that the superb standards exemplified by the staff of the Major Trauma Unit become replicated throughout the NHS, when that becomes possible for all us.
