"Diagnosed out of the blue with throat cancer"

About: North Devon District Hospital / Cancer Services North Devon District Hospital / Ear, Nose and Throat Royal Devon & Exeter Hospital (Wonford) / Cancer Services

(as the patient),

In Feb 2024 I was very unexpectedly diagnosed with throat cancer in Exeter. I was told I would be having the operation in 7 days, a total whirlwind erupted around me being bombarded with so much information.

Three days after diagnosis I met with Emily & Clare at Barnstaple ENT unit. I can not express enough how they took the time to explain everything to expect and the positive results that can happen.

I fully understand the consultant, Joel, who also has been amazing, had to give me all the facts warts and all. The meeting with the ladies really did settle my mind and put me in a far more positive frame of mind.

Post up I had 30 radiotherapy treatments which I found very difficult. Emily and Clare have been amazing, extremely professional and of course very knowledgeable. It is there bedside manner which has been exceptionally supportive. I can never thank them enough for getting me through to where I have progressed to date and learn to live with the new me.

I was recently delighted to receive a notification from Joel that my recent PET scan shows nothing of concern.

The teams in Barnstaple, Exeter and Taunton and everyone in the NHS I have met have all truly, truly been fantastic. Well done I will forever be exceptionally grateful.

Good Afternoon Vernie,

Thank you for taking the time to provide us with such wonderful feedback at such a difficult time and as you quite rightly state in a total whirlwind.

I can see Claire has also responded so she is aware what a difference her and the team have been in supporting you with this diagnosis and follow on treatments.

It is wonderful to receive such wonderful feedback when someone has been faced with such a difficult time.

Your positive attitude towards this will support your going forward.

We also have further support with our Fern Centre at North Devon Hospital and should you wish to find out any further information please contact Tara on 01271 311855 or see them on the website at https://www.royaldevon.nhs.uk/our-sites/fern-centre/.

I wish you the very best with the rest of your journey.

Lisa

Dear Lisa

Thankyou for your response. I am aware of the great support the Fern centre offers and I would encourage everyone to at least visit to understand what great support is offered. I do get so frustrated with the political pantomime playing which must be so demoralising to individuals in the NHS. Emily and Claire (spelt correctly🤦‍♂️) were and remain so supportive as were everyone and I really mean everyone who I’ve met on this frightening journey. You ALL do an amazing job….. please never forget as individuals what you do to make such a collective positive difference to poorly people. Xx
