"Knee-jerk reaction."

About: Rampton Hospital

(as the patient),

Today Rampton management made the decision to remove all waste bins from dayrooms. This was due to a tragic incident at a mental health unit in the south of England. The rational for this decision was to minimise the risk of a patient.

While this may be a risk in other units, on the Peaks Unit, no patient would ever be alone in the dayroom without a member of staff present, thus reducing the likelihood of such an incident been possible. The removal of bins is only going to result in our living areas becoming unclean and unhygienic. I doubt it's going to save any lives.

This type of knee jerk reaction is typical of the NHS and is unhelpful. Please return our bins and find better ways to safeguard patients.

Firstly, I would like to thank you for taking the time to feedback to us, around the removal of bin liners and plastic bags from the inpatient areas of the trust. I understand that this is causing inconvenience and as a trust we acknowledge that it is not an ideal solution, and I can assure you that we are working on finding a more sustainable solution.

I wanted to just offer the background to this decision, which has been taken at the highest level of the trust following a number of serious and tragic incidents occurring elsewhere within the country and national guidance for inpatient mental health services.

As a hospital, the Rampton leadership team were directed to remove all plastic bags from patient areas and removal of bin liners from patient communal areas on the 6th of November 2024. As a leadership team, we considered the options around bins (removal of bins all together or keeping the bins without bin liners within them) and communicated this decision with the ward managers and quality matrons as an interim solution.

We, as a team met with the other senior leadership teams across the medium and low secure units to work together to find a more sustainable solution and some proposals have been developed and are in the process of being scrutinised. We are hopeful that this process will not take a large amount of time.

Finally, I would like to thank you again for feeding back to us and if you have any further questions around the current position then please feedback to your ward manager / quality matron.
