I was referred to Livilands after an overdose. I attended different online courses, 1-1 sessions and was looking for an assessment to find out what is wrong with me. I’ve been back and forward between psychology and psychiatry for almost 11 years in total.
After completing the safety and stabilisation course I wished to be assessed. There was some difficulties with some nurses and I was then under the care of the deputy charge nurse, Amy, until she left then the senior charge nurse, Laura, with whom I’ve just been discharged.
The care I’ve received from both deputy and senior charge nurses I can’t fault. I have a lot of trauma and find it difficult to trust people therefore it takes me a while to develop this. Laura and Amy made this much easier, they were kind, patient and non judgmental. Often giving me a different perspective but making me laugh. They got me through one of the most challenging times of my life by being consistent and doing what they said they would. Laura went over and above her role and I’m sad that it’s come to an end. However, I understand that it’s due to the progress I’ve made.
After a long process and many therapies/ treatments I finally got to see Dr Lyer, psychiatry, and finally felt listened to. He agreed to assess me for autism in a year's time to allow me to finish my current therapy and a period of waiting for stability.
I was supported by the senior charge nurse who had spoken to him prior to my appointment and asked questions on my behalf as I’d have forgotten. I was in tears due to the relief of feeling listened to and believed and not dismissed as has happened previously.
He also did not discharge me so I would not have to complete the referral process again. He gave me information on what the assessment process would entail and asked that my mum attend with me to gather the information required from my childhood.
Sometimes we all need a little help and support to get back on our feet, and it makes such a difference when someone genuinely cares.
