My husband and I decided to have a homebirth after our 12 week scan. From that point onwards, we were keen to find other likeminded people to listen to their home birth experiences.
There were limited meet ups in Glasgow. So we were happy when the Glasgow HomeBirth team decided to run their own monthly meet the team session.
It was so reassuring to hear the stories of other women who had given birth at home. It made us feel 100% certain and empowered about our choice.
My husband also found the sessions particularly reassuring as he was able to ask the midwives and other birthing partners questions. This helped him feel much more included in the experience.
It was also great to meet the full team as my midwife, Kylie, ended up not being the midwife that delivered our baby - Caroline K was on call that evening! We also met Caroline B one of the team sessions, who was fundamental to the success of my breastfeeding journey.
Being a first time mum, and in a vulnerable/emotional state post partum, it cannot be underestimated the positive impact it had on me to have a familiar face coming to my house each day after birth.
Having the opportunity to come back to the Glasgow Home birth team meet up and share our story was so rewarding. If we could make one mother or father to be feel as confident in their decision about home birth as we did, we knew we had done a good job 👍🏼
The amount of questions we got from attendees just showed the importance of having these sessions in place. I believe they should be rolled out across the NHS to positively impact and empower more pregnant women.
