"The sessions were a great success"

About: Specialist Child Health & Disability / Speech and Language Therapy Services

(as a parent/guardian),

My boy was offered speech and language via the trust, when we started sessions we soon realised he had issues with words and how they are put together. He was offered a 6 week program for Speech Awareness.

The sessions were grouped sessions with other children which made it more comforting to my boy as he didn't feel under pressure as other children where participating. The sessions went on weekly for 6 weeks and you could see the understanding coming together as they progressed.

My child is in P2 currently and Cat 1 with Education Authority under teacher support so these sessions really helped tie that learning together. The speech therapist Clare and Inca were very patient and worked at each individual child's levels.

The sessions were a great success to us and it was great for my understanding to know the level in depth of where my child needed the extra support.

Dear blujn45

Thank you so much for posting on Care Opinion about your son's experience of speech and language therapy with Claire and Inca.

I feel really proud as their manager in hearing your kind words.

Our phonological awareness groups are a new direction of travel for our service and it is so encouraging to hear that they are hitting the mark with the children and their parents. We agree that a small group can be a supportive environment for children to progress in and I'm delighted to hear that you and your son found the sessions helpful..

Inca and Claire have excelled in how they have implemented the group and I am particularly pleased to hear that you felt each child's individual level was acknowledged. We strive to make our intervention as individualised as possible and it sounds like Inca and Claire are doing a great job with this.

We plan, in time, to extend our groups out to a wider range of children. This way of working can be an effective use of our limited resource.

I will make sure to pass on your kind words to Claire, Inca and our wider team

Thank you again for taking the time to post your story on Care Opinion. It means a lot to me as a manager and in particular to our therapists who work so hard every day.
