"The staf we saw were so very caring, kind and helpful"

About: Royal Aberdeen Children's Hospital / Accident & Emergency (Emergency Care)

(as a parent/guardian),

Recently My son was admitted to Aberdeen A&E Sick Kids with a suspected concussion.

All the staff members we saw were so very caring, kind and helpful. I wish I could remember more names but it was a long evening and I was so focused on my son. I’m sure the Dr we saw was Jasmin and we had a lovely student nurse with a beautiful name I think it was Annette and I’m sure Chelsea was one of the nurses.

We were in for a long time but I never felt that we had been forgotten or left alone in any way. You could tell the department was very busy but my son had routine observations and anytime I needed to speak to someone there was always someone available.

Small little gestures also made a worrying situation better like the lovely student nurse who despite being so busy stayed with Ru so I could nip to the loo as I didn’t want to leave him on his own. When I came back she had even found him a cosy blanket. I was even given countless cups of tea which I’m sure is not part of their job description but which were really appreciated.

There was even a great little box of activities and story books in the room as well as little games round the walls. I can imagine it’s hard work supplying and maintaining these so thank you to the play team or whoever is responsible for these.

From what I observed in the waiting room I got the feeling that before we had arrived or been admitted there had maybe been a family who had had some awful news. It must be so hard for the staff to flip from dealing with such a tragedy to then being so smiley and friendly but they did and you would never had known anything was amiss at all, so super professional and so cheery with my son.

My son ended up having a CT scan and as soon as the decision had been made I was amazed at how quickly he got through for his scan and how quickly we got the results. Again as he was being wheeled through the corridors all we saw were smiles and cheery faces and well wishes.

Thankfully his scan was clear and we were allowed to go home.

As we were leaving to go home the Dr and nurse leading us out were thanking my son and I for being so patient and kind. I did nothing out of the ordinary and it made me so sad to think of what they must have to sometimes put up with when you can tell they are all working so hard.

So a huge thank you to everyone who saw and cared for my son and I on recently. You all do an amazing job and we are very grateful for all that you did. I hope you remember this next time you’ve had a hard day.

Thank you

Thank you so much for leaving this glowing feedback following your visit to the Emergency Department at RACH. I hope your son is making a good recovery following his injury. I will ensure staff involved in his care get this feedback and I know it will mean such a lot to them to know how they have helped to make such a positive difference to your and your son. If you are able to share his name and the date of attendance directly with me (sue.danby@nhs.scot) I can ensure all those directly associated with his care can get this great feedback.

Kind regards

Sue Danby
