"Mums poor treatment in A&E"

About: Dr Gray's Hospital / Emergency Medicine

(as a service user),

My mum has had to attend A&E on a couple of occasions due to complex bowel issues one which led to a bleed. She wasn't seen by a doctor during her time in the department. She was triaged and the nurse had said because the bleeding had stopped of its own accord it wasn't anything to worry about. During her time in the department there was a failure to carry out basic investigations as to why she had the bleed and where the bleeding had stemmed from. Whilst this was not a life threatening matter it has ultimately left her to deteriorate both physically and mentally.

I do understand that staff are incredibly overworked and understaffed but had such investigations taken place this could have prevented things from escalating further and prevented the unnecessary suffering she's had to endure

Dear KenzieA16

Thank you for taking the time to share your mum's recent experience of our Emergency Department. I'm sorry to hear that you feel we failed to complete basic investigations and that her condition has since deteriorated.

Our nurses follow a clinical triage process based on the patient's presenting symptoms and will often sign-post to more appropriate NHS services if emergency care is not required. We would like the opportunity to review your mum's assessment in more detail to make sure she was triaged correctly. In order to do this I'd be grateful if you could contact us directly via the Dr Gray's General Office at gram.dghgeneraloffice@nhs.scot

Thank you again for sharing your story.

Kindest regards,

Louise
