"I feel my symptoms have been ignored"

About: Glasgow Royal Infirmary / Gastroenterology Glasgow Royal Infirmary / Imaging

(as a service user),

I first experienced pain under the right side of my ribs over a year ago. My GP thought it was gallbladder related so sent me for an ultrasound which was done around March 2024. Changes within my liver were noted; the report included words like bright echo, fatty infiltration and decreased echogenicity.

Liver bloods were normal.

My GP wrote to the Royal Infirmary Glasgow requesting an appointment and/or a fibroscan.

I was denied both requests by the hospital and instead told to lose weight - I'm 5'3.5" and was 64kg and now weigh 59.5kg. I'm female, in my 50s, and do not drink alcohol.

I still experience rib pain despite lifestyle changes; I'm concerned that it's not just fatty liver and also disappointed that doctors have ignored my symptoms. Can someone reassure me that all is well with my liver?

Dea Aandykay,

Thank you for taking the time to get in touch. I am sorry to hear about the ongoing discomfort and worry you have been facing.

I understand your frustration with the process and the outcome of your requests for further examination. Given your persistent symptoms it would be best for you to speak to your GP again. They can reassess your situation and provide a new referral or explore other diagnostic options.

Thank you

Lucy
