To be the one in a hundred who gets a positive cancer diagnosis following a routine scan is a terrible shock. So it was with fear and trepidation that l attended the Altnagelvin Breast Screening Unit, however from the moment l arrived l was treated with kindness and professionalism that helped ease my concerns.

On meeting my consultant Mr McIlmunn for the first time l was immediately struck by his friendly approach as he clearly explained the diagnosis and necessary treatment to me, as well as answering any questions l had. A few days later a letter arrived confirming what we had discussed as well as the preliminary date for surgery.

The lumpectomy surgery was carried out by Mr McIlmunn and during my overnight stay he was attentive and very much present throughout my stay He answered any questions and again clearly explained the next steps.

My review followed 10 days later and again he clearly explained all l needed to know which l found to be very reassuring and  is so important in the midst of a cancer journey. I am also very grateful for his surgical skill in leaving me with a well placed neat scar as this had also been an unspoken concern of mine.

Throughout my whole experience he was also ably assisted by my designated breast care nurse Karen, who also took time to reassure me and explain the process that lay ahead. Karen is very  professional but also kind and attentive.

I also really appreciated the excellent care l received post surgery from the whole team in ward 43, as well as radiographers and theatre staff.

Thank you all for the amazing work you do in making what is one of the most difficult times in a woman’s life less scary and full of reassurance & hope.
