"Seen within minutes and rushed to intensive care"

About: Ninewells Hospital / Intensive Care Unit St Andrews Community Hospital / General Medicine

(as a service user),

Two stories:

- The minor one - This week the ear irrigation service returned my hearing to normal when I had just assumed for years that the effect was old age creeping up.

- The major one - Last year at this time, my adult autistic, non-verbal son, late in the afternoon, had his first epileptic fit in four years. While showing all of the usual signs of weariness after a fit, over the next two hours he was continuously coughing, and we were at the point of thinking about putting him to bed early.  He would have been dead in the morning had we not taken him to the community hospital just in case.  He was seen within minutes and within minutes, since his SATS were at 50%, he was in an ambulance rushing to the intensive care unit at Ninewells hospital as the nearest general hospital 16 miles away.  An induced coma and ventilation for two weeks left him healthy and well and he continues to thrive today, all triggered by that decision to just check with our local community Hospital.
