"Staff went over and above to help when he was unwell"

About: Royal Alexandra Hospital / Accident & Emergency Royal Alexandra Hospital / Neurology Royal Alexandra Hospital / Radiology

(as a relative),

My husband who has Parkinson’s was unwell and I noticed his leg was swollen, I phoned his Parkinson’s nurse Chris who advised me to take him to Royal Alexandra Hospital in Paisley to the A and E dept.

As my husband's mobility was very bad Chris said he would meet us there and when we arrived Chris was there with a wheelchair where, he proceeded to take us into the A and E.

After tests it was concluded he had a blood clot on his leg, he was immediately given an injection to start to disperse it and told to come back next day to get an image of where it was, and then to proceed to the ambulatory dept.

Next day we went to ambulatory dept to await results and met Mhairi a nurse practitioner who along with her team took exceptional care of my husband. Imaging showed he had a clot behind his knee and the next day had an CT scan which showed clots in both his lungs. He was then prescribed blood thinners.

Although Mhairi was very busy with her patients you could tell she cared very much about each patient she attended. When she was with us she took time to explain everything and made us feel at ease with all that was happening.

We both felt and saw the compassion she had for us. Mhairi is someone who in a short time made an impact on him and myself and we will never forget the care she gave us in the 2 days we spent in her department. Mhairi also liaised with my husband's Parkinson’s team to make sure all treatment given was suitable for him. Thank you Mhairi you truly are an angel.

I also want to thank my husband's Parkinson’s team at the RAH for their care given to him since his diagnosis, his consultant Dr Lucie and Parkinson’s Nurse Chris, a huge thank you to Chris who met us at A and E and also checked in with us there and at the ambulatory Dept.

Chris is another person who has made an impact with us with his care, meeting us at the A and E to checking in with us there and at the ambulatory dept. To being able to call him with any concerns about him. Chris is another person who you can tell cares genuinely about his patients, he went over and above to help when he was unwell.

Another Doctor from the Parkinson’s team, Dr Younger also checked in on him.  We also heard his consultant Dr Lucie phoned Chris on her day off to find out how he was doing, we both thought how kind and caring of her to do that.

It’s times like this that you realise how lucky we are to have the NHS and receive all this medical care and expensive testing for free.

Dear Georginaj138,

Thank you for sharing your feedback. It is great to hear that your husband's care was excellent especially from Mhairi and Chris and Dr Younger and Dr Lucie. I am sure they will appreciate hearing this.

I am pleased that you felt that you and your husband were looked after, and I hope he is feeling better and recovering well.

Kind regards

Lucy
