"Recent admission for Emergency Surgery"

About: Inverclyde Royal Hospital / Accident & Emergency Inverclyde Royal Hospital / General Surgery Inverclyde Royal Hospital / Surgical Receiving Ward -H North Inverclyde Royal Hospital / Theatres, Recovery and Anaesthetics

(as the patient),

I attended IRH ED in the early hours with severe abdominal pain and vomiting. Following investigations, I was admitted to H North surgical  receiving, pending further investigations. Following these investigations, I was diagnosed with acute cholecystitis and scheduled for surgery after 24 hours of IV antibiotics. I would like to highlight how well I was cared for throughout every stage of my journey in IRH. The ED staff were quick to manage my pain and nausea, and refer me to the appropriate specialty, not to mention how reassuring they were. On admission to H North, the Charge Nurse, Donna, and the nursing team helped me get into bed and settled. They also arranged further pain relief and commenced the prescribed treatment.

24 hours later, I was taken for surgery and began my recovery. The theatre staff gave me lots of reassurance to ease my anxiety which I was grateful for.

I am telling my story because I was overwhelmed by the kindness, care and attention I received while a patient in IRH. ED nurses, Gary and Gemma, were fast acting and reassuring, Staff nurses Ade, Paula and Lauren from H North were caring and attentive, as were all the staff on the ward. CN Donna kept the ward calm, and all staff appeared to know their role well. HCSWs on H North - so many to mention, Bunmi, Megan and Leeanne, were all attentive and I noticed their attention to detail in maintaining cleanliness on the ward.

Lastly, I would like to mention how the portering and domestic staff played an important role in my journey by showing kindness, compassion and interest in my wellbeing.

As a nurse myself, I felt it necessary to highlight how humbling it is to be on the other side as a patient and feel so well cared for. Thank you to all involved in my care.

Dear Kim1986,

Firstly I'm very sorry to hear you were admitted to hospital as an emergency patient, that must have been a really worrying time for you.

It's lovely to hear how well you were cared for throughout all departments in the hospital, from pain management and reassurance in ED, to getting you promptly to the surgical receiving ward and on to theatre after initial management with IV antibiotics.

The staff you have mentioned so kindly are delighted to hear your lovely words and I have passed on your praise to ED, H North, theatres, portering and domestic staff.

I hope you are recovering well at home.

Kind Regards

Heather
