"Delayed Surgery"

About: Crosshouse Hospital / Day Surgery

(as a service user),

My mother was admitted  having fallen and broken her leg in numerous places . She was subsequently transferred to the day surgery recovery ward to await her operation.  She was informed her surgery would most likely be the following Tues, she was then told it would be on the Mon instead , they fasted her but it didn't go ahead.  She was then fasted on the Tues once again it didn't go ahead and again fasted on the Wed and it didn't go ahead . She was given mixed reasons for her surgery not going ahead including that more serious operations were required and that planned surgeries with appointments came 1st which put her to the back of the queue daily !

While all this upset was going, on having fasted for 3 days in total , no food was put by for her. It was a case of finding whatever the kitchen had left, which I feel is totally unacceptable! My mother was already in a vulnerable state hoping for her surgery to go ahead for days on end without having no planned food available to her . These are basics and I feel that patients should be informed what their food options are should their surgery not go ahead .

The nurses in her ward were good, they done their best for her to make her as comfortable as possible.  On the other hand a surgeon was extremely rude and spoke to her, in my opinion, like no patient should ever be spoken to, saying she should be thankful she has a bed as the hospital was full and also that she should have gone home and waited on her appointment. Mum was not allowed to go home due to the severity of her injuries! No one should be made to feel they should be thankful or grateful for lying in a hospital bed awaiting surgery,  it's not their choice,  accidents happen all day every day .

Mum's overall experience was anything but good . She has since had her operation and been discharged. I'm sending this as I don't want anyone to have to go through what she did and for lessons to be learned.  We all deserve to be treated with compassion,  empathy and respect while being admitted.

Thank you for leaving this feedback. I am sorry that your mum's journey didn't go smoothly and that her experience wasn't a positive one. I will ensure I pass this feedback onto the whole team and hopefully there are some aspects we can improve on within the ward area. I am glad she is at home and recovering well - please tell her to take care
