"Ayrshire and Arran home birthing team"

About: Ayrshire & Arran Community Services / Community Maternity Services Ayrshire Central Hospital / Maternity care

(as a service user),

When I found out I was pregnant with my second child I was delighted but also terrified at the thought of having to face childbirth again. My first experience hadn’t went as expected. I felt my autonomy had been disregarded and as if I was part of factory system for delivering babies.

At my first appointment with the maternity team in Ayrshire and Arran, I explained this to Kelly my appointed midwife and discussed that due to previous experiences- I would like to have a  birth at home. This choice was fully respected and I was transferred over to the Home Birthing Team.

A few weeks later Mary from Ayrshire and Arran home birthing team completed a home visit with myself and my husband. Mary explained fully the process and accepted any questions providing detailed, knowledgeable answers. From the first consultation I felt seen, comfortable and informed of the care process that was to follow.
My care consisted of a well rounded approach looking at my mental, emotional and physical needs. I experienced pelvic girdle pain early on however after a discussion with Mary, I was referred to physiotherapy and received acupuncture. Both of which made a massive difference to reducing my pain and allowed me to carry on participating in meaningful occupations - such as looking after my toddler and driving to work.
Also during this time, sadly my mum passed away. The team were a massive support for me during this period pre and post birth, offering mental health support and allowing space to show emotions during visits. I never felt rushed and always felt listened too.
Fast forward to when our baby was due, I felt fully prepared and confident that I could deliver at home. My husband set up a birthing pool and I spent the day in labour in my house, this made me feel very calm and relaxed. When it was time for my little boy to make an appearance, my husband called the on call team - who answered immediately and Mary and Dianne arrived at my house promptly.
I will always be thankful of the care they provided and how they helped guide me through my labour. They gave me confidence to trust my body and comfort knowing I still had the medical support present if required. The home birthing team provided 5star/ gold standard service and I will never forget the positive impact this has had on my life after a pretty rough year. The team allowed me to start 2025 on an extremely exciting and positive note.
I would absolutely recommend anyone who is pregnant and considering a home birthing to trust their body and go for it!
Couldn’t have asked for a better experience.
