"Nurse's friendly and professional attitude"

About: The Ulster Hospital / Emergency Department

(as the patient),

I recently had to go to A&E at the Ulster Hospital due to abdominal pain and God's honest truth I was expecting the worst in terms of the place being a warzone and the staff ready to rip the heads off patients and if I had have had any other choice I wouldn't have went but was in severe pain so...

In the end I was there for over 14 hours and was pretty miserable, however there was a particular member of staff who stood out for their friendliness, professionalism and care and I would like to share my feedback hopefully to his manager but also in way of thanks to Gary directly.

I was triaged by Gary within about 45 minutes of arriving and he had a great way about him that even though I was in a lot of pain and very worried about the cause of said pain, he effortlessly put me at ease as I say was friendly, good humoured and on the ball.

This was I think at the start of his shift at around 9pm, but the next time I saw him at 4am after he had dealt with seemingly half of Northern Ireland's population, he was still exactly the same and hadn't let the busy pace or let's face it maybe not the nicest of patients in some cases lessen his initial friendly and professional attitude.

So I can't imagine I am the first to say this about Gary, but I just wanted to hopefully bring this to the attention of Gary's boss and just to thank Gary personally for his help, even though he couldn't remember the name of his aftershave! But I won't take that personally.

Keep up the great work and thanks again.

Just to add to this I am normally a pretty harsh critic and have previously had some pretty negative experiences with some NHS staff, so definitely credit where credit is due in this instance.

Hi belfastrab

Thank you for taking the time to tell us of your experience when attending the Ulster ED. Yes it certainly can be a very busy department and often overcrowded, making it difficult to assess patient as timely as we would aim to. I really appreciate your lovely comments about Gary. Gary often gets good feedback from his patients and it is well deserved. I will share your comments with him and he will be delighted to receive them.

I hope you are keeping well and improving following your attendance.

Best Wishes

Jenny

ED Lead Nurse
