"Bowel cancer"

About: Adult Health Services / Macmillan Improving the Cancer Journey North Lanarkshire

(as the patient),

Oct 2024 as a result of the screening programme for bowel cancer it was after investigation found that I had a malignant tumer in my bowel.       Felt much the same as in 2019 when I was told I had COPD.   stage one

Things happen.    Just have to get on with life.      My wife had breast cancer diagnosis in 2010     Double mastectomy   Reconstruction followed later by

a Hysterectomy.

Felt my problem was no way near as big as what she went through.

Still working.   Self employed.  Had to consider how that would be impacted.    Not entitled to any benefits.     Treated time off as I would a holiday and take the hit.

Didn’t want to contact McMillan as I thought they had bigger things to deal with than me.

Surgeon was positive about early stage and robotic keyhole surgery so recovery time should be quicker.   Hospital tues 14th Jan     Out of hospital on the Fri   Back to work three weeks later.   Was feeling better.    Two days into work and back in hospital   For five days.   On antibiotic drips and clamp put on microscopic hole in bowel.  Things happen after surgery.    Resumed working.   The effect of cancer did have an effect on my COPD and much more breathless     Decided to contact the people from McMillan support to see what help I could get if I was going to be off again. And help with blue badge.  This is when Pauline contacted me.   Pauline has been very helpful, professional in what she does and as you see on tv about McMillan support  …… Is a very caring person to a total stranger

She has advised me on several matters and took care of paperwork I would at this time feel too overwhelming.

I never ask for help.    dealing with whatever comes my way.     But have found Pauline a godsend knowing she is there willing to help and I have realised I, like others, do need help with the minefield that is cancer.

6 years ago I was told I had COPD.     Never asked anyone for help.   Too proud.  Get on with it.   Too stubborn or whatever but now realise when you get hit with BIG issues you should ask for help.     There are many people like Pauline, who I cannot thank enough, that can and do help.

Any help is a big morale booster.   It makes you think you are not alone outside of your family who have been very supportive and always there for me. Pauline has made it quite clear she will follow up on how I’m doing and she can be contacted by me at any time.

Thank you to Pauline and McMillan Support
