"Nursing staff"

About: Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust - Queen's Medical Centre Campus / Older people's healthcare

(as the patient),

Not one of the nurses in the whole time asked any of the elderly if they would like a drink. When I arrived on ward the nurses were stood round gossiping loudly and it took over an hour for a nurse to say hello. Surely someone should come over and let you know where the toilets are, say hello, let you know they are there if you need them.

I found the toilets and water myself but most of the people on the ward were a lot older and not capable, like the patient next to me that wet theirself, only to be found later and spoken to like they were a child.

One patient needed a commode and I could hear the nurses moaning together huffing and puffing. We can hear you! I’m pretty sure the patient heard you too and felt awful!

The lights were turned out around 11pm but the nurses were still talking loudly and giggling so much so I was one patient jump out of her sleep.  I just found that common sense was lacking massively. Nurses just seem to hate their job now and I got bog standard care.

In my whole 24 hours I only saw one nurse with that friendly spark and twinkle in their eye. A light hearted joke, and a quick listen to patients, place you hand on the elderly and tell them you're there to look after them and that they are no bother.

A little more attentiveness, caring, empathy, compassion would really build trust with patients and probably the overall wellness of the ward and staff.
