With a diagnosis of advanced arteriosclerosis in March 2024 I was scheduled for an urgent angiogram which I underwent at Craigavon Area Hospital in October 2024. During the angiogram I had a 14mm stent inserted in my left anterior descending artery (LAD). By January 2025 I was enrolled in a series of Cardiac Rehabilitation Classes through the Cardiac Rehabilitation Team based at South Tyrone Hospital.
The classes involved a programme of exercise and information over an eight week period with a view to strengthening my cardiovascular system, helping to boost confidence, mental wellbeing and improving life expectancy.
From the outset I was very impressed with the depth of knowledge and care provided by the attending nurse and physiotherapist. Their attention to each of the programme's participants was first class and interaction with GPs and consultants produced rapid turnarounds in blood testing, medication reviews etc. This was community based medicine at its very best and I cannot commend this excellent service enough.
At the end of the programme I was given real world data on my improvement in fitness and cardiovascular strength. It has done a great deal to improve my confidence in living with my condition going forward and in addition I have been offered an extended service of access to local leisure services for a further 10 weeks.
"Community based medicine at its very best"
