"Openly making comments"

About: Dr Gray's Hospital / Emergency Medicine

(as a service user),

Unfortunately due to mental health reasons I have needed to attend A& E on multiple occasions. Most of these have resulted in people openly making comments amongst staff including rolling eyes. This in no way is supportive of those who genuinely need help at at time of crisis. If this has happened to me I can’t even begin to imagine what other people who suffer with mental health issues have to deal with. It is incredibly damaging and is not only unprofessional, it’s uncalled for.

Dear KenzieA16,

I’m sorry to hear you’ve been going through a tough time recently and that your experience in A&E wasn’t as good as it should have been. Staff are under a great deal of pressure at the moment but they shouldn’t have made you feel upset or acted unprofessionally.

Please be assured your story has been shared with the A&E team and they have discussed the impact interactions like this can have on patients. I appreciate you taking the time to highlight this to us.

Take care,

Alasdair
