"Left feeling badly let down"

About: University Hospital Hairmyres / Medical/Gastroenterology (Ward 11)

(as the patient),

I had waited 5 months for an appointment with a Consultant Surgeon following tests and was told my case was a very complex one which required specialist opinion. The appointment with the Consultant was then moved back 3 months.

As soon as I sat down it became apparent that the clinician knew nothing of my case and they appeared completely disinterested. They made it clear they wouldn’t consider me for surgery and I was in literally for 5 minutes. I felt dismissed by their manner and they were calling for another patient before I had even left the room.

Not what you would expect after such a long wait for an appointment and answers. It was a waste of my time and the appointment could have been offered to someone else. I now have to wait again for a new GI appointment which I feel I should have had from the start and I would know my treatment plan by now.

I have always valued the NHS and at a time when I really needed their help I have been left feeling badly let down by the lack of care and compassion.

I am a young man and can’t move forward with my life until I know what can be done to help me.

Dear Defenderhf45

I am sorry to learn that you do not feel your experience of accessing the Gastroenterology Services at UHH was to the standard you were expecting. Feedback on all services is very important to us as it helps us to know when things are going well or when we need to review and improve certain aspects of care, you have said you feel badly let down by the lack of care and compassion you received. This does not align with the standards we expect and I would ask if you could contact the Patient Affairs department on email:patient.affairs@lanarkshire.scot.nhs.uk or telephone: 01355 585325 to provide more details that would allow your concerns to be reviewed.

Kind Regards

Kirsty
