"Blessed to be cancer free"

About: Queen Margaret Hospital / Endoscopy Victoria Hospital / Clincal Oncology Victoria Hospital / General Surgery

(as the patient),

I thought I had irritable bowel for some time but began having uncontrollable bowel trouble in the street, car, shops. Following 2 examinations GP assured me it definitely wasn’t cancer but could be Crohn’s disease or diverticulitis. I was delighted to be told it wasn’t cancer and waited for a colonoscopy appointment to find out what it was.

Then I began passing blood, saw a different doctor, urgent tests were ordered and after having waited 9 months was given a colonoscopy, which couldn’t be completed owing to a large tumour in and through my colon.

In early 2024 I was admitted to Victoria Hospital Kirkcaldy where I underwent surgery by Mr Robertson and his wonderful team. The care and support from them and the nursing staff was amazing, I was supported through so much as there were complications which led to a longer stay in hospital. They definitely all went above and beyond the call of duty and I cannot thank them enough for the care I received.

I had ‘belt and braces’ chemo for 6 months, under the care of Dr Clive, who also was so professional but down to earth and approachable in the loveliest way. Owing to picking up a few viruses once I was home, I had another couple of stays in hospital and each time the treatment by the staff was first class.

Recently, I had my anniversary colonoscopy, done by the wonderful Mr Robertson and his team and again, it all went like clockwork, everything was explained and they made it feel so easy, it was like meeting old friends. I am  blessed to be cancer free and owe this and my life to those fantastic people who work for the NHS. Many many thanks to every one of you, from a very grateful patient.

Dear NaiNai

I am Murdina Macdonald the Lead Cancer Nurse. Thank you so much for sharing your journey with us. I can only imagine how difficult those months must have been for you, from your initial symptoms to the unexpected diagnosis and treatment.

It means so much to hear how Mr. Robertson, Dr. Clive, and all the nursing team's care and support made a difference during such a challenging time for you. I’m sorry you faced complications and a longer hospital stay, but I’m glad that the dedication and compassion of the staff helped you through it. Going above and beyond is at the heart of what we strive to do.

Your experience is a testament to the impact that skilled and compassionate professionals can have during challenging times. I will make sure your gratitude is shared with the teams involved and I know they will be deeply touched to know how much their support meant to you.

Most importantly, it’s wonderful to hear that you are now cancer-free. That is truly the best news, and I hope you continue to regain strength and enjoy life beyond treatment.

Warm Wishes

Murdina

Dear NaiNai

Thank you so much for your kind words when you speak of how you were treated as you progressed through your journey from diagnosis to celebrating your 1st anniversary. In Endoscopy we don't always hear a patients outcome as they they continue through surgery/treatment until they come in for their follow up colonoscopy which can be a nerve racking experience for you. Your lovely words when speaking about meeting old friends gives me great pride when you are talking about our staff which work across both sites at QMH and VHK Endoscopy and of course Mr Robertson. Giving you the reassurance and support as you went through the various stages of your treatment.

I hope you continue to keep well and our paths may cross again on another anniversary.

yours sincerely

Yvonne Bernard
