"No definite plan"

About: Ottery St Mary Hospital / Urology

(as a service user),

Have to say hospitals terrify me. Even descriptions of what they want to do to me leave me feeling queasy but, after suffering for 5 years and on a referral list since 2023 I was finally sold on having a 3-hour appointment with the prospect of walking out with a plan.

Having endured the tests, questions, and indignities, I was given 2 graphically written but different treatment options to consider. I was told I would receive a follow up telephone call in 2 to 4 weeks to answer any questions and progress matters.

Driving home and thinking about why I had received such a vague approach and not been offered a definite plan, I had an inkling I had just experienced a don’t call us, we’ll call you moment, and my ailment and I were quickly heading into the long grass. Enough said?

For my part I have a problem, I need a solution, so where do I go now? Either wait a couple of years for a new referral to a hopefully more functional hospital or pay to go private which I realise I have no choice but to do. Scandalous I know but will be money well spent to rid me of this longstanding problem that concerns me but evidently nobody else.

Dear Awfulpatient

Thanks you for your feedback.

I am very sorry that your visit did not live up to your expectations and that you do not feel a clear plan has been made.

It is very normal for us to provide our patients with the relevant written information regarding treatment options with the intention of enabling you to make an informed choice. I am sorry you left with the impression that you weren't being offered a definite plan.

the 'one stop ' clinic is designed to offer all investigations and results in one visit which avoids multiple visits to hospital, although we appreciate that it can be a long visit and that some of the investigations are of a personal nature.

I would be very happy to look into your case and help to resolve your concerns

if you would like the opportunity to discuss things further please contact me via email

rduh.benignurologynursespecialists@nhs.net or contact my Dept on 01392 402551, if you leave a message you will be responded to as soon as possible

Alternatively you could contact the PALS service rduh.pals@nhs.net

Best Wishes
